SASKATCHEWAN NDP FIGHTS TO PROTECT PRODUCERS BY ENDING EV TARIFFS AS GOVERNMENT HEADS TO CHINA

REGINA – The Saskatchewan NDP is demanding a public commitment to end tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles — a move that, in turn, would end tariffs on canola — as new data shows the severe damage ongoing trade wars on having on producers here.

Statistics Canada exports data for October, which was released last week, shows a 37.5 per cent decline in Saskatchewan exports to China compared to last year. The Canadian economy as a whole has actually seen an increase and in neighbouring Alberta exports to the China have increased by 33 per cent.

“It’s clear that Saskatchewan workers, producers and our economy are the collateral damage in this trade war,” said Sally Housser, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Energy & Resources.

“Scott Moe has tried to waffle and downplay the impact of trade wars with China and Trump’s America to cover for the fact that he has completely failed to deliver any sort of deal or movement to get these tariffs lifted.

“Saskatchewan producers are world-class and they should be raking in profits for all they do — instead, they’re getting hammered by geopolitical squabbles outside of their control.

Saskatchewan exports to the United States have also fallen more than 11 per cent year-to-date when compared to 2024.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is heading to China today and late Monday Premier Scott Moe said he’d be joining.

“Scott Moe should be working nonstop until he gets a commitment to end the tariffs on Chinese EVs. We know full-well this will put a stop to the tariffs on canola, peas and pork. We can’t take no for answer, the damage is too severe.”

Housser said the trade wars reinforce the need to secure major, game changing infrastructure to get products to market and diversify trading partners for Saskatchewan’s products.

“Saskatchewan is getting left behind on the national infrastructure conversation and Scott Moe doesn’t seem to care,” Housser said. “We need a provincial government that fights for the hardworking people of this province — clearly, it’s time for change.”
