Scott Moe’s Unfunded, Ideological Plan Will Double Power Bills By 2050
REGINA – Independent modelling conducted by Doug Ford’s energy firm reveals that Scott Moe and Jeremy Harrison’s uncosted energy plan risks bankrupting the people of Saskatchewan, and even the province itself, with its unfunded, ideological approach to the province’s energy future.
SASKATCHEWAN NDP DEMANDS MORE SUPPORT, LONG-TERM STRATEGY TO GET PEOPLE OFF STREETS AS COLD SNAP GRIPS PROVINCE
“I have spent the weekend visiting warming centres and talking to the incredible volunteers working on the frontlines,” said April ChiefCalf, Saskatchewan NDP Housing Shadow Minister. “Everyone deserves a government that’s got their back but Scott Moe and the Sask. Party are missing in action.”
People in Saskatchewan report higher financial anxiety than anywhere else in Canada. Rent has risen for 42-straight months in the province and four-in-10 are borrowing money or piling on debt just to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads.
A point-in-time count released late last year identified 2,000 homeless people in Saskatoon alone, nearly four times the number registered in 2022. As well, the city’s Fire Department reported 1,248 encampments as of September last year, up from 218 discovered during all of 2024.
“This is a crisis,” ChiefCalf said. “The Sask. Party needs to step in and get public housing units online immediately and restore direct payment to landlords. We need rent control, we need to cut Sask. Party taxes on groceries and clothing, and we need more supports immediately for those working on the frontlines in shelters and warming centres.”
ChiefCalf was joined for a news conference Monday by Claire Card, who volunteers helping those in need and has witnessed firsthand unhoused people losing toes and fingers to frostbite.
Government Relations Shadow Minister Erika Ritchie said municipal governments are trying to keep up with demand, but the Sask. Party has largely offloaded responsibility for the housing crisis to them without correlating investment in support.
“Scott Moe seems intent to ignore the crisis we see playing out streets in Saskatoon and right across the province everyday,” Ritchie said.
“It’s time for a provincial government that realizes that they hold the responsibility for getting people supports, for getting them off the streets — for saving lives.
“The Saskatchewan NDP will take the lead and work collaboratively with all levels of government to address this crisis starting on Day 1 of our government. It’s time for change.”
