SASK. PARTY SENT SOCIAL SERVICES CLIENTS TO BUG-INFESTED COACHMAN MOTEL DESPITE WARNINGS FROM OFFICIALS

Premier, Minister Ignored Warnings Of Bedbugs, Cockroaches, Drug Deals, And More

REGINA – The Sask. Party government had full knowledge they were gouging taxpayers and putting vulnerable citizens up in a deplorable, bedbug-infested motel, according to internal government correspondence.

Emails obtained through a freedom of information request show officials in the Ministry of Social Services recommending the Sask. Party cease using the Coachman Motor Inn in Regina as early as July 2024.
Specifically, a senior-level Director wrote that they are “not sure that this hotel should be on our list if this is the conditions of the hotel and it sounds like it is known in Regina to not be a great hotel.” Further details about the concerning conditions have been redacted by the Sask. Party.
A year later, CTV broke news that social services clients temporarily housed at the Coachman were being subjected to bedbugs, cockroaches and drug dealers trying to push crystal meth.
“This is disgusting — I bet the Premier and the Minister wouldn’t spend one minute inside that motel,” said Brent Blakley, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Social Services. “How bad does a government have to get to put people trying to get back on their feet inside a motel full of bugs, drugs and God knows what else.”
According to data released previously by the Ministry of Social Services, the Sask. Party government has consistently paid the Coachman $128 per room per night since 2022 – nearly double the advertised rate online (pages 7-8).
The Sask. Party government has paid the Coachman $243,940 from 2022 to 2024.
“Minister Terry Jenson needs to be straight with the people of Saskatchewan and explain why he ignored the advice of officials. He needs to come clean and reveal exactly how much money the Sask. Party government has paid the Coachman to date,” said Blakley.
“Homelessness is getting worse every single year under the Sask. Party. After 18 years in power, this government is out of touch, out of ideas, and has no plan to build a bright future for the people who call this beautiful province home.”
