SASK PARTY ‘PLANNING’ YORKTON HOSPITAL FOR 14 YEARS, BUDGET LEAVES CRITICAL PROJECT IN LIMBO

Scott Moe’s Bad News Budget Has No Plan to Build Long-Delayed Project
YORKTON – Scott Moe is cutting capital funding for healthcare projects, leaving the desperately needed new hospital for Yorkton in jeopardy.

The Sask. Party had full designs for the project 14 years ago and even held community town halls. But last week’s release of a “new” healthcare plan from Scott Moe listed the hospital as being in the “pre-design” phase.

Last month, local Sask. Party MLA David Chan even conceded the project has been in “planning” since 2021 and Wednesday’s budget says it will remain in that phase until at least 2027.

“Some in Scott Moe’s inner circle say the Yorkton hospital is in the planning stage, others say it’s in the ‘pre-design’ stage — whatever that means — the bottom line is Yorkton has no new hospital, no funding to build a new hospital and no timeline for when they will actually get a new hospital,” said Jared Clarke, Rural & Remote Health Shadow Minister.

“We know this hospital has been needed for two decades, and it now seems farther away from completion than ever.”

In 2012, the Sunrise Health Region did 22 weeks of conceptual planning on a new Yorkton hospital, including a design, a planned cost, and even a timeline for construction.

“Scott Moe and the Sask Party have a clear pattern of neglect when it comes to women’s healthcare in Yorkton,” said Jacqueline Roy, Shadow Minister of Women’s Health. “People are afraid. Saskatchewan healthcare is in worse shape than ever — Scott Moe and the Sask. Party broke it and can’t be trusted to fix it.

“Clearly, it’s time for change.”

Carla Beck’s team has committed to prioritizing the start of construction of the Yorkton Hospital immediately after forming the next Saskatchewan government. Her team is also consulting on the future of Saskatchewan healthcare in general — everyone in the province is welcome to provide input and feedback at YourCareYourSay.ca.
