SASK. PARTY BLOCKS EMERGENCY MOTION, SHIELDS LAW-BREAKING EX-MLA FROM ACCOUNTABILITY OVER $731K MOTEL SCANDAL

REGINA - The Sask. Party just blocked another emergency motion from the Saskatchewan NDP in order to protect a corrupt, law-breaking former Sask. Party MLA from accountability and tough questions.

The Conflict of Interest Commissioner found that Grewal illegally cashed in on $731,000 in contracts over four years — an astronomical jump from the $1,309 he had received in government contracts prior to taking office.

“This guy ripped off taxpayers and he hasn’t even gotten a slap on the wrist,” said Shadow Minister for Ethics and Democracy Meara Conway.

“The Sask. Party is sending a dangerous message: if you’re a Sask. Party MLA, you can use your position to line your own pockets, as long as you don’t run for re-election after you’re caught and ride off into the sunset.

“After 17 years in power, there are some new faces but they are the same old Sask. Party. The old boys club at the Legislature just isn’t working for the people of Saskatchewan.”

In his Oct. 21 ruling, the Commissioner tasked the Legislative Assembly with determining a proper penalty for MLA Grewal’s illegal actions.

Had the Sask. Party supported the Saskatchewan NDP’s motion, MLA Grewal would have been called to appear before the Committee of the Whole Assembly for cross-examination.
