SASK. NDP SAYS SASK. PARTY GOVERNMENT ‘ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL’ AMID TRUMP TRADE WAR, DEMANDS PLAN TO PROTECT JOBS & PROMOTE ECONOMY

SASK NDP Shadow Minister Calls on Sask. Party MLAs in Prince Albert to come out of hiding as constituents fear impacts to jobs, community

PRINCE ALBERT – The Saskatchewan NDP said the latest reprieve from devastating tariffs imposed by Donald Trump should not stop the creation of an aggressive plan to retaliate against the US President and develop a long-term plan to end reliance on the country as a trading partner.

The goal isn’t smaller tariffs, it’s not tariffs in 30 days,” said Kim Breckner, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Trade & Export Development. “The goal — the only goal — is ZERO tariffs.”

Breckner was in Prince Albert for a news conference on the ongoing trade war on Friday. She reiterated demands for the Sask. Party Government to reopen the legislature and get to work on a series of retaliatory measures to amplify pressure on Trump. Breckner also reinforced the need for the adoption of a plan put forward by Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck to add rail capacity across Canada, build a pipeline to the country’s East Coast, add powerlines in every direction and fully twin the TransCanada Highway.

“This trade war should be a wakeup call for us all, but the Sask. Party has been asleep at the wheel,” Breckner said. “These projects will drive the Canadian economy forward, allowing us to promote trade, access new markets and move our goods faster.”

Breckner demanded the government develop a specific strategy to protect jobs and promote the economy in Prince Albert and the surrounding region. The most recent job numbers for Prince Albert are again stagnant, as per Statistics Canada’s report today. She also called on the Sask. Party MLAs elected to represent Prince Albert to come out of hiding.

“People deserve answers, they deserve a government willing to listen to them, especially in such a scary and difficult time,” Breckner said. “The Sask. Party should be holding a town hall right in downtown Prince Albert – I would be happy to attend and lend a hand.”
