SASK. NDP DEMANDS ANSWERS AFTER REPORTS EMS CHIEF FIRED FOR TELLING THE TRUTH

REGINA — The Saskatchewan NDP is demanding answers from Scott Moe’s Health Ministers Jeremy Cockrill and Lori Carr after reports that a longtime EMS chief was fired for speaking honestly to municipal leaders about dangerous staffing shortages in Saskatchewan’s emergency medical services.

The Saskatchewan NDP has sent a letter to Minister Cockrill seeking an explanation for the alleged dismissal of EMS Chief Glen Perchie, who warned municipal officials that Saskatchewan’s EMS system is in “the worst shape we’ve been in for years” and “one sprained ankle away from being down an ambulance.”

‎
“I certainly hope these reports are not true, because firing a frontline leader for telling municipal leaders the truth about risks to public safety is completely unacceptable,” said Meara Conway, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Health.

‎
“Transparency is not optional. Public confidence in the Saskatchewan Health Authority is at an all-time low, particularly as much of its leadership and board have been identified as Sask. Party donors, insiders, and political operatives.”

‎
The reported firing has sparked widespread anger among first responders and rural residents. The Mayor of Whitewood has said the alleged dismissal sends a troubling message, and news of the incident has gone viral on a Facebook page for Saskatchewan first responders.

‎
In the letter, Conway demands answers on why Mr. Perchie was allegedly dismissed, why the government has failed to be transparent about EMS shortages, and what steps will be taken to fix the problems identified and rebuild trust with first responders and rural communities.

‎
“Saskatchewan people deserve assurance that your SHA is operating as a healthcare system — not as an extension of the Premier’s Office,” said Conway. “Your responsibility is to deliver safe, reliable healthcare, not to protect the Sask. Party from criticism.”
