In response to criticism about the abhorrent state of healthcare in Saskatoon, the SHA told reporters that an additional 109 beds were being brought on to increase overall capacity, with 20 now operational.
“The truth is these beds are not new, they are just rebranded to a new service,” the statement reads.
“Several beds were CLOSED to allow for renovations to take place, and only 20 have been reopened. These were all supposed to be open in August 2025, and now they are saying it will be ‘months’ before the closed beds will be reopened.
“Similarly, SHA proudly announced 40 new Transitional Care beds in 2024. These beds were not ‘new’ — they have been filled with patients for the last five years and were finally separated into a permanent ward instead of being overcapacity beds. Nothing changed except a budget label. Nurse are being gaslit by leadership.”
The Saskatchewan NDP has recently proven that the SHA board is stacked with Sask. Party hacks and that they can’t be trusted.
“So which is it, new beds or rebranded ones?” asked Keith Jorgenson, Saskatchewan NDP Associate Shadow Minister for Health. “The SHA needs to be straight with the people of Saskatchewan if they want to preserve any shred of credibility they have left.
“If the Sask. Party spent half as much time fixing the problems in healthcare over the last 18 years as they do trying to cover them up the with smoke and mirrors, our hospitals wouldn’t be in chaos.”
Over the weekend, SUN fact-checked the SHA’s misleading claim that hallway healthcare at Royal University Hospital was due to a surge in flu.
Last week, the SHA was forced to apologize after stating that a closed emergency room was in fact open and after failing to correct record for four days after receiving conflicting reports.
