SASK. NDP CALLS ON FEDERAL AND PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENTS TO SUPPORT DROUGHT-STRICKEN CATTLE PRODUCERS

RM of Big Stick Declares Local Emergency, More RMs Expected If Dry Conditions Continue

REGINA – The Saskatchewan NDP is calling on the federal and provincial governments to support livestock producers and rural communities facing hardship from drought with the extremely dry conditions putting feed and water in short supply on the heels of an already turbulent year.

“Our cattle producers produce the best beef in the world, and they need our support when we see the threat of drought putting livelihoods at risk,” said Trent Wotherspoon, Deputy Shadow Minister for Agriculture. “There are actions that both levels of government should be taking today to have the backs of cattle producers and grain growers during this difficult time.”

Specifically, Wotherspoon called on the federal and provincial governments to act urgently to do each of the following:

  • Recognize the significant threat posed to agricultural producers posed by the emerging drought and institute a drought action committee with leadership from rural municipalities, livestock producers and agricultural groups to plan and deliver a coordinated drought response as necessary.
  • Build and improve business risk management programs and ensure equity for livestock producers and the backstop they deserve, with both the provincial and federal governments contributing their share of premiums as they do for crop insurance.
  • Allow for a 10-year deferral of federal capital gains for producers forced to sell off cattle due to drought, as called for by the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association.

“We’re all hoping for a solid rain, but this is a time for strength in leadership. It’s time to stand shoulder to shoulder with our cattle producers,” Wotherspoon said.
