SASK. NDP CALLS FOR EMERGENCY PLAN TO KEEP MUCH-LOVED REGINA HEALTH CLINIC OPEN

TWO WEEKS UNTIL THOUSANDS OF PATIENTS LOSE FAMILY DOCTOR ACCESS
REGINA – The Saskatchewan NDP is calling on Sask. Party Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill to present a plan, by Monday at 1:00 PM, to keep the much-loved Gardens Community Health Centre open.
The clinic is on track to close in just over two weeks on November 30 due to a lack of doctors.
“An estimated 5,000 patients could lose their family doctor if the Sask. Party does not act now,” said Meara Conway, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Health Minister. “This will be a huge blow to our community and a huge blow to the thousands of families that rely on this clinic.
“The Sask. Party needs to do absolutely everything in its power to keep this clinic from shutting its doors.”
The Gardens Community Health Centre was once heralded by the Sask. Party as the future of primary care in Saskatchewan when it first opened in 2018. That year, the provincial government budgeted $4.3 million for the clinic and $3.0 million annually beginning in 2019-20.
In September, patients were notified of the impending closure in a letter from the clinic stating that it “cannot secure sufficient physician staffing.” A job posting for two family physicians at the clinic has remained open on SaskDocs for nearly eleven months.
“After 18 years in power, the Sask. Party and their friends at the SHA are driving doctors and nurses out of the province in droves,” said Conway. “We need big bold change to get our health system out of last place.”
