REGINA BOARD CHAIRS SAY MOE’S BILL TO BUILD SCHOOLS FASTER... WON’T ACTUALLY BUILD SCHOOLS FASTER

Premier Plays Games To Duck Accountability For Building School In Hometown, Delaying & Cancelling Other Projects
REGINA – Scott Moe and his ministers continue to play despicable political games with desperately needed Saskatchewan schools, pushing for passage of legislation that education leaders are telling the government won’t actually speed up construction.

On Monday, while facing a barrage of questions about why Moe chose to build a school in his own neighborhood over 200 other facilities in 100 Saskatchewan communities that are in worse shape, the Premier and his Ministers began demanding immediate passage of the so-called Build Schools Faster Act.

There’s just one problem — the bill doesn’t do much.

According to a joint letter sent late last week from Adam Hicks, Regina Public Schools board chair, and Ryan Bast, Regina Catholic schools board chair, the proposed changes in the Act, “may address one barrier but are unlikely, on their own, to substantially accelerate the delivery of new schools.”

The letter was provided to the Official Opposition and released to media Tuesday.

“Scott Moe is trying every move in his playbook to avoid questions about why he’s picking winners and losers when it comes to new schools and our kids’ education,” said Matt Love, Education Shadow Minister. “We know that Shellbrook is getting a brand-new school and 100 communities are going without.

“We also know that schools already committed to by Scott Moe are being delayed. The Premier lied to reporters point-blank when he claimed no such delays are occurring because of his bad news budget.

On Monday, Moe denied in a media scrum that any school projects were being delayed. However, his communications team later issued a statement contradicting their own boss, confirming that both the Carlyle school project and the Campbell Collegiate renovation in Regina have been put on hold as a result of his bad news budget.

The Official Opposition has also confirmed a delay for a new school in The Towns in Regina and heard rumours of at least 20 school projects in total being impacted by the budget.

Moe’s Minister of Education also acknowledged on Friday that “several projects” are being delayed and committed to providing a full list to media — no such list had been provided as of Tuesday morning.

Education capital funding has been cut by 35 per cent in the provincial budget.

“This budget is bad news for public education from top to bottom,” Love said. “People will pay more because of this budget and, still, their kids will not see any benefit.

“I am calling again today on Scott Moe to release the full list of school projects being delayed or cancelled and to release any and all documents that went into the decisions in this budget that saw him prioritize a school in his own community despite 200 others being in more desperate need.

“The Premier can’t keep lying and trying to change the channel on these critical questions. It’s time to own up for what you’ve done — families deserve so much better and it’s time for change.”
