PARENTS, PROVIDERS RALLY IN FRONT OF LEGISLATURE AS SASK. PARTY DRAGS FEETS ON CHILDCARE AGREEMENT

REGINA – The Saskatchewan NDP joined concerned parents and childcare providers on the brink of closure rallied in front of the Legislature today to call on the Sask. Party government to sign a federal deal for affordable childcare before it's too late.

Saskatchewan is one of only two provinces in Canada that has so far failed to get a new childcare deal. With only six months before the current deal expires, childcare centres are at risk of closing, workers are at risk of losing their jobs, and families are staring down soaring prices and lost childcare spaces.
“The best time to sign a deal would have been a year ago when nearly every other province did it — the next best time is now,” said Joan Pratchler, Saskatchewan NDP Childcare and Early Learning Shadow Minister. “Sign the deal!”
Concerns for the future of $10-a-day childcare is on the rise as new Angus Reid polling shows Saskatchewan people have the worst levels of financial insecurity in Canada. After 18 years of the Sask. Party, 51 per cent of Saskatchewan people say it’s difficult to feed their household and 76 per cent say they’re stressed about money.
“Moms and dads cannot go to work in hospital or the mine if there is nobody to take care of their kids,” said Pratchler. “We can’t have a bright future in this province if we don't have affordable childcare.”
