OUT-OF-TOUCH JUSTICE MINISTER THINKS SASKATCHEWAN’S WORST-IN-CANADA CRIME RATES ARE ‘ENCOURAGING’

MOOSE JAW – Sask. Party Justice Minister Tim McLeod says he’s encouraged by the state of public safety in Saskatchewan, despite the province being ranked the worst for crime severity in Canada.

“We are seeing a decrease, and I think that’s an encouraging sign, in terms of some of the strategies we’ve deployed,” said McLeod on Monday, standing next to Battlefords MLA Jermey Cockrill, whose community’s crime severity has jumped 30 per cent since 2018.
According to Statistics Canada, the Crime Severity Index in Saskatchewan for 2024 was 153.9, nearly double the national average (77.9) and two-and-a-half times the numbers for provinces like Ontario and Quebec:
Canada
77.89
Saskatchewan
153.85
British Columbia
92.98
Alberta
95.63
Manitoba
141.24
Ontario
60.69
Quebec
63.01
New Brunswick
84.53
Newfoundland
89.25
Prince Edward Island
72.59
Nova Scotia
75.45

“Minister McLeod is completely out-of-touch with the challenges facing his own community and province,” said Nicole Sarauer, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Justice.
“After 18 years of the Sask. Party government, people no longer keep their doors unlocked. People don’t feel safe in their own businesses or being out in their own communities at night.
“For Minister McLeod to suggest otherwise shows how unserious he is about getting tough on crime and the causes of crime.”
