OPPOSITION CALLS ON MOE TO STAND UP TO POILIEVRE AND PRIME MINISTER CARNEY ON CHINESE EV TARIFFS

Saskatchewan NDP Demands Scott Moe Get On Phone And Tell Federal Leaders To Stand Up For Producers, Agricultural Sector
REGINA – The Saskatchewan NDP is calling on Premier Scott Moe to tell Conservative Party of Canada Leader Pierre Poilievre and Prime Minister Mark Carney to back widespread calls to cancel tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and end a trade war that is devastating for canola and pea producers and agriculture in Saskatchewan and Canada.
On Friday, Poilievre refused to endorse calls from the Prairies for the federal government to scrap the tariff on Chinese EVs. The Chinese government has responded to those tariffs with its own devastating, 75.8 per cent penalty on canola.
“No, I don’t believe that is the right way to go,” Poilievre said when asked directly by a reporter to back calls to end the tariffs.
“That’s just not good enough,” said Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck. “Scott Moe needs to pick up and phone and be clear with all the leaders in Ottawa: these tariffs on electric vehicles need to end.
“The damaging and disproportionate hit to our economy and producers is unacceptable and the voices of our producers need to be heard.”
Year-to-date, Saskatchewan exports to China have fallen 28.8 per cent, and by 48.5 per cent comparing July 2024 to July 2025.
“Our federal leaders need to start listening to the Prairie provinces,” Kim Breckner, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Trade & Export Development.
“This is about fairness and our future — the future of our agriculture sector, the future livelihoods of so many producer families in this province and country.”
