NEW REPORT SHOWS SASK. HAS HIGHEST HOSPITALIZATION RATES FOR VACCINE-PREVENTABLE RESPIRATORY ILLNESSES

CIHI Says Hospitalizations Last Year More Than Double Pre-Pandemic Levels
REGINA – Carla Beck’s team is putting the Sask. Party on blast after a report from the Canadian Institute of Health Information revealed that Saskatchewan had highest rate of hospitalizations among the provinces for vaccine-preventable respiratory illnesses, more than double pre-pandemic levels.

In 2024-25, the hospitalization rate for vaccine-preventable respiratory illnesses was 199 per 100,000 people in Saskatchewan compared to 142 nationally.

Saskatchewan has the second worst vaccination rates in Canada for seasonal flu (30.2%), only behind Quebec.

“Hospitals are bursting at the seams,” said Meara Conway, Shadow Health Minister. “People are waiting days in emergency rooms and hallways. We should be doing everything possible to keep people healthy and cut down on ER visits.

“A vaccination is a simple cost-effective way to do that and we need a government willing to highlight the benefits of this to the public.”

Internal provincial health authority information previously released by the Official Opposition shows that there were 22 cases of Tuberculosis diagnosed between January 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026, across Prince Albert and surrounding areas.

The Sask. Party admitted at the time to not notifying the public of the cases

“We need big bold change to get our health system out of last place. After 20 years in power, the Sask. Party has broken our health system and they can't be trusted to fix it,” said Conway.

“It’s time for change.”
