SASK NDP, UNITED STEELWORKERS CALL FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION TO RESPOND TO DEVASTATING TRUMP TARIFFS ON STEEL

Saskatchewan NDP says long-needed pipeline to Canada’s East Coast should be built using locally made steel.

REGINA – The Saskatchewan NDP is standing with United Steelworkers to demand action in response to devastating 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian steel expected from Donald Trump

Today, is day we saw coming but hoped would never arrive,” said Mike Day, USW Local 5890 president.  “My message to Donald Trump is – you have to stop. You’re hurting both the Canadian economy and the American economy.

“And my message to Scott Moe is – step up. Bring forward a plan, something that I can take back to my members to demonstrate to them that your government gives a damn.

“Right now, I see nothing coming from this Premier and his government. No plan to get us out of this mess. No plan to help workers while we’re in the middle of it. Saskatchewan workers deserve so much better.”

Aleana Young, Saskatchewan NDP Jobs & Economy Shadow Minister, said the Sask. Party Government could start by creating more steel jobs in Saskatchewan by banning all new and existing steel contracts from being awarded to US companies.

“It’s steelworkers that will bear the brunt of these tariffs and they deserve support,” Young said. “They deserve a government that will fight back and take bold action to secure Saskatchewan’s economic future.”

Sally Housser, Saskatchewan NDP Energy & Resources Shadow Minister, said she wants to see cross-Canada action to build a much-needed pipeline to Canada’s East Coast – a pipeline, she added, that should be built using Saskatchewan steel

“This is about focusing on a future that we control,” Housser said. “It’s about delivering economic prosperity for future generations. It’s about ensuring that no one — and especially not Donald Trump — can ever hold the Canadian economy hostage again.”
