MUCH-NEEDED BRIGHTON SCHOOL SIDELINED AS SCHOOL IN MOE’S OWN NEIGHBOURHOOD JUMPS THE LINE

Premier, Staff Can’t Keep Story Straight On Which Schools Are Being Delayed
SASKATOON – Construction has yet to begin on a much-needed school for Saskatoon’s rapidly growing Brighton community — despite promises from Scott Moe to build it almost two yeas ago — while a new school in the Premier’s hometown of Shellbrook has been fast-tracked ahead of it.

“Governments should be not picking winners and losers,” said Joan Pratchler, Associate Shadow Education. “As a former principal, I have no patience for the boys that jump the line, and I know the hardworking people of Saskatoon don’t either.
“This community has so much potential and it deserves the infrastructure to match. They deserve and government that keeps their promises.”

Brighton and surrounding neighbourhoods have seen significant population growth in recent years, leaving many Saskatoon schools at or above capacity. Brighton alone has 9,000 residents living in the community.

The Brighton joint-use elementary school was promised in the Saskatchewan Party’s last election-year budget. Two years later, there is still no clear timeline for construction.

Meanwhile, a new school in Shellbrook was announced in this year’s provincial budget, despite more than 200 schools in over 100 communities being in worse condition, according to the government’s own facility condition index.

On Monday, the Premier denied that any school projects were being delayed. However, his communications team later issued a statement contradicting their own boss, confirming that both the Carlyle school project and the Campbell Collegiate renovation in Regina have been put on hold in the latest budget.

The Minister of Education also acknowledged on Friday that “several projects” are being delayed and committed to providing a full list to media.

Education capital funding has been cut by 35 per cent in the provincial budget.

“This is a bad news budget that fails our children,” added Pratchler. “Moe and his minister need to be straight with the people of Saskatchewan.

“Release the procurement documents. Explain why this is still an empty field, not a beautiful new joint use school like you promised in the election.

“It’s time for a change.”
