MORE LAYOFFS HIT SASK POLY WILL MEAN FEWER OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS, FEWER SKILLED WORKERS FOR SASKATCHEWAN

Series Of Layoffs Over Months While Moe, Sask. Party Do Nothing To Protect Post-Secondary
REGINA – Carla Beck’s team is calling out Scott Moe and the Sask. Party after Saskatchewan Polytechnic quietly confirmed Wednesday that another 30 employees are being laid off, adding to 150 previous layoffs.

The latest cuts include 18 faculty, nine professional services employees and three out-of-scope staff.

“These are the people who train the next generation of healthcare workers and tradespeople our province desperately needs,” said Carla Beck, Saskatchewan NDP Leader.  “After years of labour shortages in healthcare and in key industries, cutting Saskatchewan Polytechnic staff is the wrong choice at the wrong time.

“Where is the Sask. Party in all of this? This is not leadership. These layoffs are bad for Saskatchewan, for our future. It’s time for change.”

The Faculty Association has previously warned that “confidence is wavering” in Sask Poly’s four-campus model, particularly the future of its campuses in Moose Jaw and Prince Albert.

Campus bookstores have already been shuttered, and the Health Information Management Program has been put on ice.

“We can’t have a strong Saskatchewan without a strong Sask Poly,” Tajinder Grewal, Shadow Minister for Advanced Education. “After 20 years in power, the Sask. Party has no plan to keep our children here and grow our economy.

“This government has starved our post-secondary schools of funding for years and made them reliant on international student tuition.

“The investments we make today will set us up for success tomorrow. It’s time for change.”
