MOOSE JAW FAMILIES DESERVE BETTER AS SCOTT MOE FORCES MASSIVE FEE HIKES FOR CHILDCARE

Families Across Province To Pay More As Sask. Party Breaks Childcare Promise
MOOSE JAW — Carla Beck’s team is calling out Scott Moe for lying to Moose Jaw families as he imposes harmful new changes to childcare funding that are already hammering them with higher costs.

Childcare providers in Moose Jaw and elsewhere are already planning new fees on families to cover funding shortfalls.

On Wednesday, changes were imposed by Scott Moe’s Education Minister Everett Hindley that stripped childcare providers of proper funding for part-time and casual spaces, which are relied on by healthcare workers and others performing shift work. Not to mention families of kindergarten children who require part-time care all over this province.

“Families in Moose Jaw already tell us every day that they’re struggling to make ends meet and making impossible decisions between paying rent and putting food on the kitchen table,” said Joan Pratchler, Shadow Minister for Early Learning & Childcare. “Now, the affordable childcare they were relying on is being ripped away from them by a Sask. Party Government and Premier in Scott Moe who can’t keep their word.

“It’s shameful, ill thought out, and shortsighted and, frankly, people are sick and tired of a government that thinks it can get away with this.”

Families in Moose Jaw have consistently reported financial insecurity as a top concern — people in Saskatchewan as a whole report higher stress around finances than anywhere else in Canada.

“The Sask. Party has done nothing to help with the cost of living,” Pratchler said. “They’re making life so much harder for people that want to build their lives here. These changes will force more people out of the workforce and more people to turn the local food bank, which has been overrun with demand for months.

“My message to families in Moose Jaw is you deserve better than this. We can deliver affordable childcare for every community in this province. Be assured that this Carla Beck government hears you and will work with you from Day 1 to get Childcare right in every corner of this province. It’s time for change.”
