“Either this government is incompetent, or they stopped caring long ago about the people they were elected to represent — neither is good,” said Sally Housser, Shadow Minister for Energy & Resource Development. “This is a pattern with this Sask. Party government going back 20 years. They spend tens of millions of dollars on a whim with no oversight, no accounting — they couldn’t even bother to send out a press release.
“It’s ignorant, it’s entitled, and it’s just more and more evidence that it’s time for change in Saskatchewan."
Public Safety Minister Michael Weger has been plagued by repeated scandals since taking the job last December. First, he failed to properly outfit the province’s waterbomber fleet in advance of this summer’s wildfire season, despite serious issues with getting planes in the air last year as hundreds of homes burned.
Then, weeks ago, the Saskatchewan Marshal’s Service, which Weger is responsible for, was caught trying to buy high-powered rifles, sound cannons and other militarized weapons and gear associated with riots. There was no justification for the purchases, especially for a service that hasn’t even hit the recruitment targets Moe set out in the election campaign.
Weger only intervened on the Marshal’s spending spree after they got caught.
“We don’t need Moe and Weger building American-style security forces here in Saskatchewan — we need a real plan to get serious about public safety by recruiting more officers and investing in programs that address the root causes of crime,” Housser said. “This Minister clearly isn’t up for the job and now he wants a blank cheque? Not good enough. Not even close.
“We don’t have to settle for this. We can change the government, make our communities safer and spend taxpayer dollars wisely. It’s time for change.”
