Healthcare workers joined the Saskatchewan NDP at the Legislature to draw attention to the letter.
Signed by 15 radiology technologists and nurses, the letter warns: “Lack of physician coverage has already resulted in cases where patients did not receive life-saving interventions in time.”
“We’re the birthplace of Medicare. Saskatchewan people deserve healthcare when and where they need it,” said Vicki Mowat, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Health.
“After 18 years in office, the Sask. Party has run out of ideas and just isn’t focused on building up our health system for the future.”
The letter goes on to detail that:
-
6 of 10 IR technologists and 5 of 9 nursing positions have not been filled
-
Patient procedures are delayed due to physician shortages
-
Burnout, declining mental health and staff resignations are occurring due to unsustainable working conditions
-
Procedure rooms are being used by other programs, resulting in delays, longer patient wait times and increased overtime
-
New hires are not adequately trained
-
A multi-million-dollar radiology suite at Pasqua Hospital is not being used because of short staffing
“After 18 years of the Sask. Party, Saskatchewan is ranked last place in Canada on wait times and healthcare staffing,” said Meara Conway, Shadow Minister for Rural and Remote Health.
“Every measure should be taken to end this crisis as soon as possible so patients can get lifesaving care. That shouldn’t be the bare minimum for a provincial hospital in the provincial capital.”
The Sask. Party government cut healthcare by $17 million in their most recent budget.
