IN WAKE OF $26 BILLION COAL BOMBSHELL, SCOTT MOE BLOCKS MOTION TO MAKE ALL SASKPOWER COSTING DOCUMENTS PUBLIC

Coal Cover Up Continues As Failing Sask. Party Scrambles To Explain Ten-Fold Increase In Costs
REGINA — Scott Moe, his discredited SaskPower Minister and all other Sask. Party MLAs rejected a motion Thursday to release all costing documents related to SaskPower, one day after it was revealed the cost of the government’s coal plan is a staggering $26 billion.

On Wednesday, Carla Beck tabled leaked documents in the Legislature during budget estimates showing the cost projection to refurbish coal plants — a figure 10 times higher than what the government has claimed. For context, Saskatchewan’s entire provincial debt from 1905 — the year the province was formed — to today is roughly $44 billion. The annual provincial budget is $22.2 billion.

Moe was clearly caught off-guard during the estimates questioning and then attempted to repeatedly claim the document wasn’t his plan despite it clearly being developed by SaskPower. In response to his dodging, Jobs, Economy & SaskPower Shadow Minister Aleana Young attempted to introduce a motion to publicly release all SaskPower costing documents, but it was rejected by Moe and his MLAs.

“This is yet another cover up on top of a cover up — and ultimately Saskatchewan people pay the price,” Beck said. “We know this coal plan is a catastrophe and will saddle us with crushing debt for generations to come.
“Scott Moe and his Minister won’t even come clean and tell the truth as they drown us in red ink.

“It clearly is time for a government that is upfront, truthful and that has a real and credible plan for Saskatchewan. It’s time for change.”

The SaskPower presentation, breaks out the cost estimate for the coal plan as follows:

  • $11.4 billion in capital costs
  • $13 billion in fuel costs
  • $1.4 billion to rebuild transmission infrastructure already considered obsolete

“Scott Moe sold Saskatchewan people a bedtime story about ‘affordable power’ while hiding a $26-billion monster under the bed,” Young said. “This is quite literally one of the biggest financial scandals Saskatchewan has ever seen — and that’s saying a lot when it comes to the Sask. Party.”

Beck’s team will continue to fight Scott Moe’s plan to ruin the province’s finances with his costly, secretive coal plan. She has also released her own electricity plan that is available for the public to review and offer feedback on at GridAndGrowth.ca.
