SASKATOON – Scott Moe should personally reimburse Saskatchewan taxpayers for his trip to attend the funeral of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham — a devout Trump ally and booster of his job-killing tariffs on Canadian goods — if he refuses to tell people how much public money he spent and what value there was to the people of this province.

Earlier this week, Kim Breckner, Shadow Minister for Trade and Export Development, wrote to the Premier demanding confirmation that taxpayers funded the trip to Graham’s funeral, along with the immediate release of the total cost, a complete breakdown of expenses and an explanation of why he believed attending the funeral served Saskatchewan's public interest. On Wednesday, Moe’s office admitted the trip was paid for by Saskatchewan taxpayers, but a spokesperson still refused to reveal how much it cost.

"Scott Moe has admitted that Saskatchewan taxpayers picked up the tab — but he won’t say how much it cost, why this was a priority or how it benefits the people of this province," Breckner said. "As a public official, when your friends pass away, the public doesn’t pay for you to go to their funeral. And this friend, to be clear, was a firm supporter of Trump’s tariffs and did nothing to stop the American president from openly advocating to destroy our country and turn us into the 51st state.”

Breckner said the Premier's refusal to disclose the cost only deepens the concerns Saskatchewan people already had about the trip.

"This whole issue began because constituents were asking legitimate questions about why their Premier was attending the funeral for an American politician with a very disturbing policy agenda and harmful views,” Breckner said. "Senator Graham has said awful things about the rights of women and the LGBTQ+ community.

“Saskatchewan people are right to question this — and they deserve answers.”

Breckner said the trip also reflects misplaced priorities at a time when Saskatchewan families expect their government to be focused on problems here at home.

"We have 14,000 frontline healthcare workers preparing for a strike vote after four years without a contract,” she said. “Families are struggling with the cost of groceries, housing and everyday life.

“Rather than work to fix these problems, we’ve seen 20 years of a Sask. Party Government focused more on their own high-priced limousine rides, business class plane tickets and wining and dining.

Breckner added, "Earlier this summer, Saskatchewan people learned that the Minister of Advanced Education spent more than $10,000 per ticket on taxpayer-funded business class flights to Asia while families were cancelling vacations and piling on credit card debt just to get by.

“Clearly, this government has a personal spending problem. If Scott Moe won’t provide a basic level of openness and accountability about this MAGA funeral expedition, he shouldn't expect Saskatchewan taxpayers to foot the bill.”
