“I had two constituents from Denare Beach here in this Legislature who lost their homes demand an apology from Tim McLeod — and they didn’t get one,” McPhail said. “After he ducked, dodged and lied, my constituents called on him to resign.
“If Tim McLeod won’t rise today, formally apologize and agree to launch a truly independent public inquiry, then he should resign.
“If he won’t resign, then Premier Scott Moe should fire him. It’s that simple.
“The people of the North have never had a voice with this Sask. Party government over 18 years and McLeod’s defiance to do the right thing only made matters worse.”
The Sask. Party shot down a motion from McPhail on Tuesday to launch the formal public inquiry as residents of Denare Beach sat in the Legislature’s public gallery.
An independent public inquiry would have been fully independent of government and could have been led by a former judge.
Members of the Cabinet and senior leaders of government agencies responsible for the wildfire response could have been subpoenaed to testify at public tribunals.
“What happened to my constituents this summer should never happen again,” McPhail. “The North will rebuild because the people that call it home are incredibly strong; however, they should be able to pick up the pieces knowing the government has their backs — and that they will do what’s necessary to protect Saskatchewan communities, now and into the future.”
