HUNDREDS OF SASKATCHEWAN FAMILIES SEE CHILDCARE BILLS QUADRUPLE, SCOTT MOE’S MINISTER SAYS IT’S ‘THE BEST WE COULD GET’

Minister Takes 9 Months to Sign Childcare Deal that Leaves Hundreds of Families Out In The Cold
REGINA — A new childcare agreement takes effect today in Saskatchewan, leaving hundreds of families behind. Families with children who have already turned six will see their childcare bills quadruple.

“Scott Moe and his Minister had nine months to deliver on their promise and they failed,” said Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck. “The cost of everything is going up and very few families can afford to have their childcare bills quadruple overnight.”

In November, Scott Moe’s Minister of Education touted finally signing onto the federal childcare extension. The Minister claimed the lengthy negotiations were necessary to ensure six-year-olds were included. However, when details were rolled out via email to providers, it became clear the deal was not as advertised.

When pressed in the Legislature by the Saskatchewan NDP, the Minister claimed this deal was “the best we could get” when referencing negotiations with the federal government.

“This is not the best deal they could get – it’s a broken promise and families deserve better,” said Joan Pratchler, Shadow Minister for Childcare & Early Learning.

“Today, families with six-year-olds woke up to childcare bills that have quadrupled due to their child’s date of birth — not their year of birth, but the exact day. It’s unbelievably unfair.”

The Lloyd family is one such family. Ian and Tina Lloyd live in Saskatoon and their daughter just turned six yesterday on March 31. This morning, they were faced with a $900 childcare bill. Their bill for March was $217.50.

“It’s ridiculous, and I’m angry,” Tina said. “Our family misses the cutoff by a few hours, and now we pay hundreds of dollars more each month for the same care. Most families don’t have hundreds of extra dollars each month. It’s incredibly unfair.”

"After 20 years in power, this tired and out-of-touch Sask. Party government is breaking their promises and leaving hundreds of families behind,” added Beck. “It’s time for change.”
