Prices At The Pump Soar To Nearly $1.90 Per Litre, Still Sask. Party Charges Gas Tax
SASKATOON – Carla Beck’s team is — again — calling on Scott Moe and the Sask. Party to suspend the gas tax as prices soared again Wednesday due to refinery disruptions south of the border.
HOW HIGH DO GAS PRICES HAVE TO GO BEFORE MOE WILL CUT DRIVERS A BREAK?
By late afternoon Wednesday, at least a dozen gas stations in Saskatoon were raising their prices to nearly $1.90 per litre. Still, Scott Moe and the Sask. Party continue to pile on the cost with a 15-cent-per-litre tax that costs urban households $650 per year and rural households $750 per year.
“Scott Moe gets up in the Legislature every day during this Spring Session and says there’s nothing to worry about, all the while they very people he was elected to serve are worried about putting food on the kitchen table and keeping a roof over their heads,” Beck said.
“This is a Premier living in a fantasy world. He spends his days paying off his political allies and donors while hardworking, every day people are living off food bank hampers and donating their blood plasma just to get by.
“Clearly, something has to change and it’s this Sask. Party government.”
Prices shot up in late February by 40 cents due to the conflict in the Middle East. On April 20, the federal government cut their fuel tax, but Moe refused to follow suit. His government is also jacking rates for car insurance in June and has already raised the power rates by a staggering $136-million on struggling families, farms and small businesses.
Saskatchewan people have consistently reported the greatest financial anxiety in Canada.
“How high do prices at the pump have to go before Scott Moe does the right thing and suspends his punishing gas tax?” questioned Matt Love, Saskatchewan NDP Caucus Chair. “Families are already scraping by — they can’t afford to pay $100 more or to fill up their vehicles, which they rely on to get to work, pick up their kids and so much more.
“And it’s not just the fuel tax. They’ve jacked power rates, they tax groceries and clothing for kids. They’re downloading costs onto municipal property bills at a staggering rate.
“Basically, if it can be taxed, this government will find a way to tax it.
“Saskatchewan people don’t have to settle for this. We can elect a Carla Beck government that is laser-focused on making life more affordable on Day 1. It’s time for change.”
