HORRIFIC MEMO SHOWS CRITICAL, LIFESAVING SURGERIES FOR NEWBORNS IN REGINA CANCELLED INDEFINITELY

Scott Moe’s Failure In Healthcare Jeopardizing Infants In Desperate Need, Forcing Them To Be Taken To Saskatoon
REGINA — A devastating memo obtained by Carla Beck’s team shows neonates, premature infants and medically complex young babies will no longer be able to receive critically needed surgeries in Regina due to a lack of anesthesiologists.

The document, which several sources have said was distributed in either late March or early April, says that, effective April 1, all medically complex procedures involving infants born at full term up to eight weeks of age or infants born premature up to 48 weeks post-date of conception will now be transferred out of Regina to the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon.

Sources said transportation of critically ill infants can often take hours to arrange, putting babies in medical distress at risk of serious and permanent injury — or even avoidable death.

“This is heartbreaking and devastating,” Beck said. “These are the youngest and most vulnerable people in Saskatchewan — they deserve immediate emergency healthcare right here in Regina.

“We’re told the warning signs of this crisis have been there for well over a year. Why did Scott Moe and the Sask. Party do nothing to restore proper healthcare for babies? What does it take for these guys to act?”

Medical procedures impacted by the change include anything requiring installation of a central line, bowel blockages, procedures involving an infant’s heart or brain and so much more. The memo issued by the Saskatchewan Health Authority, whose communications branch is run by Scott Moe’s former campaign staffer, insists the change is being made due to a “low volume of procedures.” However, that was disputed by healthcare workers speaking to Carla Beck’s team on condition of anonymity.

The memo provides no indication or plan to restore anesthesiology services in Regina.

“This clearly is a permanent change and it could cost lives,” said Meara Conway, Health Shadow Minister.

“Healthcare workers tell us that the babies of women who did not access prenatal care will be particularly at risk of avoidable death.”

Conway said that this crisis comes as a result of a lack of planning to recruit and retain anesthesiologists: “Removing access to critical surgery for neonates in Regina is another example of an unprecedented crisis in our healthcare system. Now some of the sickest and most fragile newborns will be forced to transfer to Saskatoon while critically ill when timely access to care is often essential for their survival.”

The recent bad news budget from Moe increased healthcare funding by just 0.3 per cent — Moe even took additional funding from the federal government and spent it on unknown items not related to healthcare.

“We’re going to fight this,” said Jacqueline Roy, Shadow Minister for Women’s Health. “Having a critically ill baby is devastating. Being forced away from your support system makes it ten times harder to cope.”

“This comes down to priorities and it comes down to choices made by a 20-year-old government that stopped giving a damn about doing its job long ago.

“It’s time for big, bold change in healthcare and that’s exactly what Carla Beck’s team is going to deliver.”
