Environment Shadow Minister Jared Clarke first wrote to Minister Darlene Rowden 160 days ago, on April 17, questioning the apparent and complete absence of any form of Environmental Impact Assessment on the original data centre project. Last week, without warning, Scott Moe announced the project was quadrupling in size. No form of consultation with the public has occurred at any stage. Footage captured by Beck’s team at the data centre site last week indicates construction is well underway.
"Five months ago, I asked the Environment Minister a very simple question: where is the environmental assessment for this massive project? We still haven't received an answer," said Clarke. "Construction is underway, the project is now four times larger, and Saskatchewan people are being stonewalled the entire way.
“This entire project has come together through shady backroom deals convened by a Sask. Party government that has been in power far too long and forgotten it’s accountable to everyday Saskatchewan people.”
Beck's team has held three public consultations on hyperscale AI data centres and received thousands of petition signatures and hundreds of written submissions raising questions about land use, wildlife impacts, water consumption, air quality, electricity demand and environmental oversight.
"Saskatchewan people deserve to know how these massive projects will affect their communities, their land and their water," Clarke said. "We've heard from hundreds of people asking thoughtful, legitimate question. They deserve answers — they deserve a better government.”
Clarke has demanded a written response and the release of all relevant documents by the end of day Friday.
