ENCAMPMENTS CAUSED BY YEARS OF SCOTT MOE FAILING TO DELIVER ON HOUSING AND ADDICTIONS TREATMENT

Homeless Encampments Spread In Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Elsewhere Due To Sask. Party Inaction
SASKATOON – Carla Beck’s team is demanding that Scott Moe and the Sask. Party government get off their hands and fund affordable housing and mental health and addictions services in Saskatchewan.

The call comes as unhoused tent encampments have been established in Regina’s Pepsi Park, along Saskatoon’s 20th Street and near 48th Street in Prince Albert in July, August and September.

“Homelessness across the province is out of control, and Scott Moe refuses to treat it like the crisis that it is,” said April ChiefCalf, Shadow Minister for Housing. “We need a government with a serious approach to creating more affordable housing and funding real supports for addictions treatment to help people experiencing homelessness.”

On Wednesday, six Regina City Councilors signed onto a letter to the Sask. Party on the housing and addictions crises driving homelessness in Regina.

The letter calls on the government to fund affordable housing to match demand, make it possible for people to afford a place to live, and stop discharging Saskatchewan people into homelessness.

“It is so difficult for people to get out of the addiction cycle if they don't have the proper treatment supports or a safe place to sleep at night,” said ChiefCalf

On Aug. 14, ChiefCalf wrote to Social Services Minister Terry Jenson and challenged him to see firsthand the consequences of the Sask. Party's failure to provide housing supports along 20th Street in Saskatoon. On Sept. 4, Regina Douglas Park MLA Nicole Sarauer wrote to Jenson challenging him to visit the encampment that has been established at Pepsi Park in her constituency. Jenson has failed to show up at either encampment.

“After 20 years in power, the problem has only gotten worse. We don't want to see people living in tents when they can be living in houses. We need to give people the supports they need to build a bright future for themselves, our downtowns, and our small businesses,” said ChiefCalf.

“The Sask. Party has ignored these people and let this problem spiral out of control. Clearly, it's time for change.”
