DEAR MINISTER, STOP HIDING FROM OVERWORKED FRONTLINE HEALTHCARE WORKERS FACING CONSTANT SAFETY THREATS: NDP

Scott Moe’s Failed Health Minister Should Visit The Emergency Rooms & See Firsthand The Harsh Conditions Workers Face
SASKATOON – Amid an ongoing hospital capacity and safety crisis in Saskatoon, the Saskatchewan NDP is demanding Scott Moe’s Minister of Health stop hiding in his posh Cabinet Office and take a trip to the frontlines to hear directly from workers begging for help.

On Thursday, Minister of Health Jeremy Cockrill declared he would conduct a review of safety in Saskatchewan hospitals after months — if not years — of calls from workers to do more. Hours before Cockrill’s ‎announcement, images were released by the Official Opposition showing dozens of weapons seized from a single entrance at Saskatoon’s Royal University Hospital.

As well, more than 200 workers at nearby St. Paul’s Hospital recently wrote to the head of the Sask. Party-run Saskatchewan Health Authority demanding an emergency safety plan after a series of incidents, including one where a patient was found onsite with a firearm and three knives.

Cockrill’s review had no timeline, no defined scope and no commitment to engage directly with frontline workers.

“The Minister’s so-called review is too little too late,” said Nathaniel Teed, Saskatchewan NDP Labour Shadow Minister. “The reality is frontline workers have been looking to this Sask. Party government for help for as long as I have been elected.”

“They’ve been bravely speaking out the government has refused to listen. In fact, just this week, we revealed the Sask. Party is going as far as to set up a snitch line to intimidate and muzzle these healthcare workers — it’s pathetic.”

Teed called on Cockrill to commit publicly today to visiting the emergency rooms at RUH and St. Paul’s and speaking directly with frontline workers.

“Hiding in the Saskatoon Cabinet Office is not real leadership,” Teed said. “We have seen this for months, as soon as the Sask. Party comes under fire on healthcare, they make an announcement that barely scratches the surface of the issue, and hope people will forget about it.  We aren’t forgetting.”

“The bottom line is Saskatchewan healthcare is in worse shape than ever. If the Sask. Party won’t fix it, they should step aside. It’s time for change.”

For months, the Official Opposition has been calling on the Minister of Health to actually go to the Emergency rooms across the province and speak with front line workers.

“Front line workers know what they need to do their job well and keep patients safe. They are the ones who should be driving this discussion.” said Nathaniel Teed, Shadow Minister for Labour. “All we are seeing from the Minister of Health is more proof that he is completely out of touch and out of ideas.”
