Scott Moe, Sask. Party Continue To Hide Details On Impact Of Massive Project
REGINA – Carla Beck’s team has written to the president and CEO of SaskPower seeking full transparency on how the new AI Data Centre project in the Rural Municipality of Sherwood, just outside of Regina, will be powered, who will pay to power it and more.
The letter sent last week asks SaskPower to publicly disclose the exact rate structure that Bell will pay, whether the rates are based on average system costs or incremental costs, the duration of any rate guarantees, and the full costs of the transmission and distribution infrastructure required to serve the facility.
"Saskatchewan people support economic development. SaskPower customers also have a right to know whether they are subsidizing this project," said Aleana Young, Shadow Minister for Jobs, Economy & SaskPower.
"New large electricity users should pay their fair share of the costs they impose, and Saskatchewan families and businesses deserve some basic transparency."
The letter from Young and Brittney Senger, Shadow Minister for Tech, Innovation & AI, also seeks details on the specific transmission and distribution assets required for the project, the cost of those facilities, who will ultimately pay for them, and whether serving the data centre will require additional investments in generation or other electricity infrastructure.
"As electricity demand from AI data centres grows around the world, jurisdictions are grappling with difficult questions about rates, infrastructure costs, and impacts on existing customers," Senger said. "Before Saskatchewan commits ratepayers to long-term obligations, we need clear answers and complete transparency."
