REGINA – Carla Beck’s team recently met with the First Nations Ombudsperson, Dr. Dianna Lafond, as part of their Your Care, Your Say healthcare consultation.
CARLA BECK’S TEAM MEETS WITH FIRST NATIONS OMBUDSPERSON WHO WASN’T CONSULTED ON SCOTT MOE’S HEALTHCARE PLAN
“What we heard from the First Nations Ombudsperson is the same thing we are hearing from frontline healthcare workers: meaningful action requires listening to the voices of those who are directly impacted,” said Meara Conway, Saskatchewan NDP Health Shadow Minister.
Yesterday, Scott Moe announced his Patients First Health Care Plan, without any consultation with the First Nations Ombudsperson. The First Nations Ombudsperson, Dr. Dianne Lafond, has received nearly 600 complaints of mistreatment and discrimination of First Nations people within Saskatchewan’s healthcare system.
The First Nations Ombudspersons office has attempted on several occasions to connect with the Premier and his Ministers to discuss the nearly 600 complaints they have received – some of which are very serious. Yet their requests have gone unanswered.
“Our office has received 594 complaints from 70 of Saskatchewan’s First Nations but have yet to be consulted on the future of healthcare in this province,” said Dr. Dianne Lafond, First Nations Ombudsperson.
“The First Nations Ombudsperson’s call for a truly independent inquiry into safety and security in Saskatchewan’s healthcare system has also gone unanswered,” said Leroy Laliberte, Saskatchewan NDP First Nations & Metis Relations Shadow Minister. “To date, the Sask. Party government has failed to provide any details about its so-called review, and given its track record, it cannot be trusted to follow through on recommendations or deliver real change.
“Saskatchewan people deserve transparency, accountability, and a plan that puts the experiences of patients and workers first.”
