CARLA BECK’S TEAM JOINS LOCAL BUSINESS OWNER, DEMANDS AMERICAN BOOZE BAN IN LIGHT OF TRUMP’S LATEST TARIFFS

Scott Moe Continues To Play Soft As Trump Threatens To Wreak Further Havoc On Canadian Economy
SASKATOON – Today, Carla Beck’s team is standing with a local Saskatoon liquor store owner and demanding Scott Moe join other Canadian provinces and pull American booze from local shelves in response to Donald Trump’s latest job-killing tariffs.

Last week, Trump announced a 50 per cent tariff on several Canadian goods, taking effect in August. The tariffs will affect billions of dollars' worth of Canadian goods, in addition to devastating so many jobs and communities across the country. The harsh penalty came just days after already-existing American tariffs were cited as a major factor in the shuttering of the Big River sawmill, a move that saw the loss of 117 Saskatchewan jobs.

“It is so disappointing to see these unjust tariffs once again wreaking havoc on Canada’s economy, but what is even more disappointing is to see our own Premier have such a meek response to this situation,” said Don McBean, Shadow Minister for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority.

“We see provincial leadership across this country ready to fight for Canada, meanwhile, Moe and his pal Danielle Smith won’t even remove American booze from the shelves.”

Currently, the sale and import of American liquor has either been restricted or banned in every province and territory within Canada, with the exception of Saskatchewan and Alberta. When tariffs were implemented onto Canada in 2025, the Sask. Party government initially removed American alcohol from shelves, only to lift the ban two months later.

McBean was joined by Varun Patel, owner of Avalon Liquor in Saskatoon, and Darcy Warrington, MLA for Saskatoon Stonebridge, where Avalon Liquor is based. Patel joined the called to pull American liquor from Saskatchewan store shelves.

“It's time to remove American alcohol from our shelves. It's an opportunity to support local Canadian producers and our local economy,” said Patel.

Warrington added: “Now more than ever, we must stand together as a united front.

“We have seen in the past how these tariffs hurt good, hardworking people in this country, and I think it’s time that Premier Moe took an actual stand against these punitive measures until we get a real trade deal.

“It’s time for change.”

The Saskatchewan NDP has heard from thousands of Saskatchewan people in recent days supporting the call for a ban on American booze.
