CARLA BECK’S TEAM INTRODUCES BILL TO PROVIDE PEOPLE WITH REGISTRY TO HELP FIND A DOCTOR

Scott Moe Could Immediately Move Forward With A Basic Tool that Every Healthcare System Should Have
REGINA – Carla Beck’s team is introducing straightforward, common-sense legislation to help people find a family doctor or nurse practitioner by establishing a patient registry.

Bill 617, the Family Physician Registry Amendment Act would create a provincewide, public registry so people can see which primary care providers are accepting patients, something nearly every province in Canada has. These systems give people one place to go to find care and help governments understand demand.

“Finding a family doctor shouldn’t feel like scoring concert tickets,” said Carla Beck, Saskatchewan NDP Leader. “People are spending hours calling clinic after clinic, scanning social media, even building spreadsheets to track leads. The very least this government can do is make it easier for people.”

Saskatchewan ranks dead last in Canada for access to primary care, according to a 2026 Angus Reid survey. The survey shows 22 per cent of residents don’t have a doctor, and 41 per cent can’t get in to see the doctor they have.
The introduction of the bill comes after conversations with people across the province through the Your Care, Your Say project.

“This is a no-brainer,” said Meara Conway, Shadow Health Minister. “The province had a registry previously, but the Moe government scrapped it because the SHA couldn’t keep it updated.

“Everyday, we come forward with more evidence of a healthcare system that is crumbling all around us. Today, we’re giving Scott Moe the chance to do just one thing positive that would greatly improve patient primary care.”

Earlier this year, the Saskatchewan College of Family Physicians launched an online petition calling on the provincial government to act. Physicians say a registry would reduce the administrative burden many clinics are dealing with because of people calling looking for a doctor.

“Build the registry. Make it public. Help people find a doctor or get out of the way. It’s time for change,” Conway said.
