Scott Moe’s Sask. Party Taxing Rotisserie Chickens, Chili, Packaged Salads, Kids’ Clothes and More
REGINA – Carla Beck’s team has introduced a bill to save Saskatchewan people $45 million by removing provincial sales tax from groceries and children’s clothes.
CARLA BECK’S TEAM INTRODUCES BILL TO PERMANENTLY AXE TAX ON GROCERIES AND KIDS’ CLOTHES
In 2017, the Sask. Party slapped the PST on groceries and kids’ clothes and hiked the rate from 5 to 6 per cent.
“People in Saskatchewan are working harder than ever and still not getting ahead,” Beck said. “The government should be doing everything in its power to make life more affordable, not drive up the costs of essentials.
“It’s wrong and so incredibly out-of-touch to be taxing kids’ clothes and all of the essentials busy families rely on for a quick dinner before hockey practice and swimming lessons.”
If passed, Bill 624 would amend the Provincial Sales Tax Act to permanently remove children’s clothes from the list of goods subject to the PST.
Certain grocery items would also be permanently made tax-free, including:
-
ready-to-eat meals, including rotisserie chickens, chili, and soup;
-
pre-packaged salads;
-
mixed and salted nuts;
-
muffins;
-
granola bars;
-
protein and energy bars;
-
fruit juices and yogurt drinks;
-
sandwiches and wraps;
-
cheese, meats, fruits and vegetables when packaged as a platter;
“It’s just wrong for this tired and out-of-touch government to make the people of Saskatchewan pay for their mistakes through taxes on basic staples,” said Finance Shadow Minister Trent Wotherspoon, who introduced the bill.
“After 20 years of this tax-and-squander government, it’s long past time for a change.”
