CARLA BECK’S TEAM DEMANDS ACTION FROM SASK. PARTY AS TREASURED GLOBE THEATRE EDGES TOWARDS CLOSURE

Regina Theatre In Need Of Immediate Financial Relief Or Will Have To Suspend Operations
REGINA – Today, Carla Beck and her team are calling on the Sask. Party government to step up and save the Globe Theatre from closing due to unavoidable financial shortfalls.

The theatre is $16.3 million in debt following substantial renovations undertaken on their downtown Regina heritage building. Costs for the renovations subsequently ran well over budget due to ballooning pandemic construction costs and unanticipated work on the 120-year-old building.

“The Globe has been a staple in Regina for 60 years,” Beck said. “It is the only theatre in the round in Canada. It’s unique, historic and it would be such a shame for Saskatchewan’s art and tourism scene if it was forced to close for good.
“This is a moment for leadership and so we’re calling on the Sask. Party to step forward and do what’s necessary to save this theatre.”

The Globe recently asked the City of Regina for $1.4 million, which would allow them to stay operational for the 2026-27 season, and were further working to secure $12 million from the federal government. The theatre had previously approached the provincial government several times to seek funding and warn about the dire financial situation that the organization was in. However, the province declined to provide any assistance.

“This is an opportunity for the Sask. Party government to step up and save one of Saskatchewan’s most important cultural institutions,” said Brent Blakley, Shadow Minister for Parks, Culture and Sport.

“The Globe has stated themselves that low ticket sales or attendance are not the problem here, and yet the provincial government has denied them support at every turn.

“They brag about supporting economic growth and building strong communities, but when it matters, where are they?

“It’s time for change.”

On Wednesday, Beck, Blakley and Regina Elphinstone-Centre MLA Meara Conway, whose riding includes the Globe, wrote to Sask. Party Culture Minister Alana Ross on Wednesday demanding action to save the Globe.
