Call To Resume Sitting Comes In Response To Ramp Up Of Trump Trade War
REGINA – In response to the escalating Trump trade war, Carla Beck's team is calling on Scott Moe to recall the Saskatchewan legislature immediately to pass legislation to immediately make life more affordable and to debate further measures to support workers in tariff-impacted economic sectors.

Other provinces have brought forward grants and training programs to support workers impacted by tariffs. British Columbia and Manitoba are helping tariff-affected workers with career coaching, retraining and skills grants, including B.C.’s $3,500 Future Skills Grant, while Nova Scotia has launched a fund to support worker training and retraining. Ontario and PEI are helping tariff-hit businesses stay afloat and protect jobs through working-capital loans, grants and other financing, while Ontario is also using investment tax credits to protect manufacturing jobs.

Beck’s team believes similar programs are worth consideration in Saskatchewan and even more urgently, the Sask. Party could support passage of a series of bills introduced by her team this past Spring Sitting to make life affordable and boost wages.

"It's time to get back to work and fight for Saskatchewan people," Beck said. "So far, the Premier has had a weak response to these job-killing Trump tariffs. He needs to stop pandering, get on Team Canada and put the self-reliant and incredibly hardworking people of this province first.

In the Spring, Beck’s team introduced bills to end Sask. Party taxes on groceries and kids’ clothing, to reverse power rate and car insurance hikes, to bring long-needed rent control, to end AI-driven surveillance price gouging that drives up the cost of goods and to enhance competition and end grocery store deserts. Her team also brought legislation that would prioritize Saskatchewan workers for Saskatchewan projects.

“This is a real opportunity for Scott Moe,” said Nicole Sarauer, House Leader for Beck’s team. “We have put a series of bills forward that can make a real and meaningful impact for people at such a tense and uncertain time for our economy.

Beck’s team is ready to sit in the Legislature at a moment’s notice and expects the government to come forward with a plan to resume sitting long before the currently scheduled start of the Fall Sitting on Oct. 27, 57 days from now.

“Saskatchewan people report the highest financial anxiety in Canada, there is record food bank use and we meet people every day that are being forced into impossible decisions between paying rent and putting food on the kitchen table — all of this is the reality in Saskatchewan before Trump’s tariffs,” Beck said.

“Scott Moe cannot continue to bury his head in the sand and pretend this is going to be business as usual. It’s time for leadership. It’s time for change.”
