CARLA BECK'S TEAM CALLS ON FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO ADVANCE CRITICAL NORTHERN ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT

Scott Moe, Sask. Party Getting Left Behind In Push For National, Game Changing Projects
REGINA – Carla Beck's team is calling on the federal government to help advance construction of a long-discussed all-season road connecting the Cigar Lake and McArthur River uranium mines, while criticizing the Sask. Party for failing to deliver critical infrastructure projects despite nearly two decades in government.

In a letter to federal Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson, Energy & Resources Shadow Minister Sally Housser and Northern Affairs Shadow Minister Jordan McPhail and Highways & Infrastructure Shadow Minister Darcy Warrington urged Ottawa to work with Saskatchewan, Indigenous leaders, Northern communities and industry partners to finally move the project forward.

"Saskatchewan should be at the centre of Canada's energy future, but we've spent too many years watching major opportunities stall because the Sask. Party fails to do what’s necessary to get projects moving," said Housser. "For more than a decade, this road has been studied and discussed. Carla Beck's team is calling on Ottawa to help finally get it built because Saskatchewan can't afford another decade of delay."

The proposed road would connect two of the world's most important uranium mining operations. Although the mines are less than 50 kilometres apart, travelling between them currently requires more than 1,000 kilometres of driving on existing road networks.

The project, if approved, would strengthen Canada's energy security, support economic growth, attract investment and create jobs in Northern Saskatchewan at a time when demand for Saskatchewan uranium continues to grow around the world.

"Canada and our allies are increasingly turning to Saskatchewan uranium to strengthen energy security and power the economy of the future," Warrington. "If we're serious about growing that opportunity, we need the infrastructure to support it."

McPhail said recent wildfires have exposed the consequences of Saskatchewan's failure to invest in transportation infrastructure.

"Last summer made clear what many of us have known and feared for a long time — just how vulnerable the North becomes when key transportation routes are disrupted," McPhail said. "When fires, floods or other emergencies close existing routes, communities and workers need alternatives. Better transportation links improve public safety, strengthen economic development and make Northern Saskatchewan safer for the people that call this incredible place home.”

While other provinces have named several major critical projects in partnership with the federal government in recent months — including a pipeline from Alberta to tidewater and major infrastructure builds in British Columbia earlier this month — the Sask. Party hasn’t even produced a list of what it is advocating for, if anything.

"Carla Beck's team believes Saskatchewan should be leading these conversations, not playing catch-up while other provinces secure major nation-building investments,” Housser said. “Ottawa needs to step up no doubt, but the Sask. Party also needs to explain why a project with such obvious benefits has been allowed to languish for so many years.

“Clearly, it’s time for change.”
