CARLA BECK’S TEAM CALLS FOR MORE PUBLIC SAFETY INVESTMENT AFTER TAXI DRIVER SHOT AND KILLED IN NORTH BATTLEFORD

Severe Crime In Saskatchewan Double The National Rate
NORTH BATTLEFORD – Carla Beck’s team is calling for further investment to hire police and improve public safety after a taxi driver was shot and killed while working in North Battleford last week.

On Friday, 30-year-old taxi driver Davinder Singh was killed while responding to a call at the Hitching Post Motel in North Battleford. Charges have been laid against two 19-year-olds in relation to Singh’s murder.
Since the horrific incident, members of the Sikh community, of which Davinder was a part of, have said publicly they no longer feel safe in the community.

“Clearly, more must be done to improve public safety for people living in North Battleford and right across Saskatchewan,” said Tajinder Grewal, Saskatchewan NDP MLA for Saskatoon University Sutherland and a member of the Sikh community.

“People who don’t feel safe will leave and not come back. We know Saskatchewan is already seeing its population decline for the first time in 20 years, and this doesn’t help.

The North Battlefords RCMP reported that, in February, there were 294 reports of property crime and 159 reports of crime against persons. The 2024 Crime Severity Index for North Battleford Municipal Police had increased from 386.99 when Scott Moe took office eight years ago to 497.84 in 2024, and the violent crime severity index increased from 378.81 to 553.42 between 2018 and 2024.

Wednesday’s provincial budget fell short of addressing the crime surge in numerous communities across Saskatchewan. Three times more is being spent to cover the interest on Scott Moe’s $43-billion debt than is being spent on the entire police budget.

“Rising crime is something we hear about everyday,” Grewal said. “People no longer feel safe to walk in their communities alone or leave their doors unlocked. It hasn’t always been like this — we deserve a government that invests in returning our communities to how they used to be.

“It’s time for change.”
