CARLA BECK’S TEAM CALLS FOR INVESTIGATION AFTER DELIVERY WORKERS CLAIM UNSAFE WORKING CONDITIONS

Gig Workers Allege They Face Punishment, Dangerous Conditions And Fear Of Termination
SASKATOON – Carla Beck’s team is calling on Scott Moe’s Labour Minister to launch an investigation immediately over concerns from delivery drivers about unsafe working conditions and a broader review of the laws governing precarious and gig work.

Standing alongside delivery workers Monday, Labour Shadow Minister Nathaniel Teed said the accounts shared by workers paint a deeply troubling picture of precarious labour conditions in Saskatchewan’s growing gig economy.

“These workers deserve safe working conditions. They deserve fairness. And they deserve a government willing to stand up for them,” Teed said.

“These are workers delivering packages in our communities every single day.

“They are working long hours, using their own vehicles and paying out of pocket for fuel, maintenance and insurance — and many say they are barely scraping by.”

Workers with Intelcom and Dragonfly Shipping allege the company has drastically reduced per-package compensation while the cost of living continues to soar. Workers also pointed to rising fuel prices, increasing vehicle maintenance costs and looming car insurance rate hikes, expected to be imposed by the Sask. Party in June.
Despite the rising costs, workers say they receive no benefits, no guaranteed wages and face constant fear that speaking out could cost them their jobs.

Teed said the situation highlights growing concerns around companies classifying workers as “self-employed contractors” while still maintaining significant control over their schedules, expectations and working conditions.

“That allows companies to avoid responsibility for benefits, workplace safety protections and basic labour standards while workers absorb all the risk,” Teed said.

He also called on the province to examine stronger protections for gig and precarious workers as more Saskatchewan people find themselves working unstable contract-based jobs without access to traditional workplace protections.
