CARLA BECK MARKS ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF SIKH HERITAGE MONTH ACT, CELEBRATES COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTIONS

Saskatchewan NDP Legislation Was Passed In April 2025
REGINA — Today, Carla Beck joined MLAs Bhajan Brar and Tajinder Grewal to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the passage of Saskatchewan NDP legislation officially proclaiming April as Sikh Heritage Month in Saskatchewan.

Bill 601, introduced by Brar, ensures permanent recognition of the Sikh community’s contributions to the province.

“This legislation is about respect and recognition,” said Beck. “It means the Sikh community no longer has to come forward year after year to ask to be seen and celebrated. Their contributions are now permanently recognized in law — exactly where they belong.”

Beck said the legislation reflects the Saskatchewan NDP’s commitment to inclusion and to the province’s founding principle: From many peoples, strength.

“Saskatchewan is strongest when we embrace the diversity of our people,” Beck said. “The values of service, equality, and courage that are at the heart of the Sikh community make our province better every single day.”

Brar said the anniversary is a moment of pride for Saskatchewan’s Sikh community and a reminder of the importance of representation.

“This Act is a meaningful step forward,” Brar said. “It ensures that the history, culture, and contributions of Sikh people in Saskatchewan are recognized and celebrated every April — not just today, but for generations to come.”
Grewal said Sikh Heritage Month also coincides with Vaisakhi, one of the most significant celebrations in the Sikh calendar.

“Vaisakhi marks the founding of the Khalsa and represents renewal, unity, and a commitment to justice,” Grewal said. “It’s a time for community, for reflection, and for celebrating the spirit of giving and service that defines Sikh communities here in Saskatchewan and around the world.”

The Saskatchewan NDP is encouraging people across the province to take part in Sikh Heritage Month events and to learn more about the history and contributions of Sikh people in Saskatchewan.

“Today is about celebration,” Beck said. “But it’s also about reaffirming who we are as a province — a place where everyone belongs and where our diversity is our greatest strength.”
