CARLA BECK HOSTS ‘YOUR FUTURE, YOUR SAY’ EVENT FOCUSED ON KEEPING YOUNG PEOPLE IN SASKATCHEWAN

Young People Continue to Leave Saskatchewan As Unemployment Rises And Cost-Of-Living Worsens
REGINA – Carla Beck and the Saskatchewan NDP are meeting with young people to hear firsthand about the challenges that are pushing them to leave Saskatchewan — and what it will take to build a future that keeps them here to pursue their careers and raise their families.

Beck, Immigration Shadow Minister Noor Burki, and Advanced Education Shadow Minister Tajinder Grewal are scheduled to lead the event on Thursday, March 5 at 6 p.m. at The Artesian.

“Young people — our literal future — are leaving. After 18 years of Scott Moe and the Sask. Party – the entire lifetime of some of the young people packing up and leaving – they haven’t even asked why or done anything to fix what is driving them away,” said Beck. “We are going to engage with them directly, take their ideas to lower the cost-of-living crisis, build affordable housing, end the disaster in healthcare, deliver-high quality education and so much more.”

In February, the Saskatchewan NDP launched YourFutureYourSay.ca in response to new reports showing the province’s population declined for the first time in nearly two decades outside of the pandemic. Statistics Canada also reported that youth unemployment in Saskatchewan rose to 15 per cent in December.

“We know the cost-of-living crisis is having a devastating impact on young people,” Burki said. “We need action on housing, to lower the cost of food and to create more jobs with bigger paycheques.

“We need to support public education and ensure it is accessible. When we trust young people to lead, if we listen and support their ideas, our young people will stop asking for luggage as a graduation gift — they will stay right here and build their futures in Saskatchewan.”

This is the first in a series of events designed to give young people a meaningful opportunity to share their ideas and shape Saskatchewan’s future. As the project develops, these conversations will help create a set of policy recommendations.

“The reality is that Scott Moe is failing young people who want to work and build a life in this province,” said Grewal. “It really is time for change and young Saskatchewan leaders are going to help us drive that change.”
