CARLA BECK DEMANDS SCOTT MOE COME CLEAN ON HOW MANY SCHOOLS WILL BE DELAYED, CANCELLED BY BAD NEWS BUDGET

Two Regina Schools, Another in Carlyle Likely Tip of the Iceberg
REGINA – Carla Beck is demanding Scott Moe immediately release a full list of desperately needed school projects that will be delayed as a result of his bad news budget.

“No more excuses, no more political games — families deserve better than that,” Beck said. “Scott Moe has pushed forward a school in his hometown of Shellbrook while delaying so many other projects that were already to be in progress.
“This is shameful and the least he can do is be upfront with families. This Premier is focused entirely on doing favours for his friends and political insiders — and everyone else pays the price. It’s time for change.”

Moe approved the new Shellbrook school in his bad news budget Wednesday despite more than 200 schools in 103 different Saskatchewan communities being in worse shape, according to the government’s own capital planning report. In response to widespread outcry about this decision, Beck’s team will be demanding in Question Period Monday that all documents related to capital projects for this year’s budget be made public.

On Friday, Moe’s Minister of Education confirmed two projects being delayed in Regina — a new school for the Towns to help ease overcrowding at Ecole Wascana Plains and a massive renovation of Campbell Collegiate. It also surfaced in the local news the Town of Carlyle’s promised new school was being put on pause.

Regina Wascana Plains MLA Brent Blakley said parents are devastated to learn about delays for The Towns school project.

“This feels like retaliation for the last election — and the Sask. Party is taking it out on the good people in my constituency,” Blakley said. “Playing political games with the education of students is horrific and just the latest sign of a 20-year-old government that stopped working for everyday people long ago.”

Despite the government’s own report classifying more than 140 Saskatchewan schools as being in either “poor” or “critical” condition, Moe’s bad news budget cut funding for school capital by $67.5 million, a 35 percent reduction from last year.
Funding per student was also cut in the budget.

“This is a government with no plan to support students, support teachers and support the schools they learn and work in,” said Matt Love, Education Shadow Minister. “Leaky or collapsed roofs, overcrowded classrooms, a lack of lockers and proper learning spaces, that’s where we’re at after 20 years of the Sask. Party.

“We don’t have to settle for this. I am proud to be part of a team that will properly fund public education. Saskatchewan, change is coming.”
