CARLA BECK CALLS FOR INVESTIGATION AFTER WOMAN DIES FROM BROKEN ANKLE, DELAYED SURGERY IN SASKATOON

Health Minister’s Claims of Gaps Offer Little Solace to Grieving Family
SASKATOON — After meeting with her devastated loved ones, Carla Beck is calling for a full investigation into the death of Kirsten Hanke. Hanke died at Royal University Hospital on Aug. 20 after complications arose from a broken ankle when her surgery was delayed due to staffing shortages.

Hanke fell while grabbing a package off her front step on Aug. 12, breaking her ankle in three places and rendering her completely immobile. She was scheduled for surgery three days later but, when she arrived, there was no record of the scheduled procedure. After hours of waiting, Hanke was sent home because there were no beds available for her to stay in the hospital. She died five days later after collapsing at home while waiting for a rescheduled surgery. The family was told she died from blood clots that had moved from her ankle into her lungs.

“Today, I’m calling on the Minister of Health to conduct a full investigation into the death of Kirsten Hanke,” said Carla Beck. “This family deserves answers, and they deserve to know that no other family will have to suffer this way.

“The Hanke family has been robbed of a lifetime of memories with their loved one because our healthcare system is crumbling all around us. And, despite that, we have a Health Minster, a Premier and entire Sask. Party government telling us their putting patients first. They didn’t once put Kirsten Hanke first.”

Since Scott Moe became Premier in 2018, surgical wait times in Saskatchewan increased by 36 per cent.  Even more damning, 333 people died in Saskatchewan waiting for surgery in the 2024-25 fiscal year.

The Hanke family’s story was first reported by Global News and shared online by the Saskatchewan NDP on Tuesday, September 15. Since then, over one million people have viewed the story, prompting hundreds of direct messages to pour into Beck’s offices recounting similar experiences.

“We’re hearing from people all over Saskatchewan,” Beck said. “Stories of loved ones dying while waiting for surgery, stories of people permanently disabled due to delays in proper care, and stories of heartbreak at the hands of Scott Moe and his government,” added Beck.

“This is the province that created Medicare. We used to lead the nation in health care. Nothing can bring Kirsten back, but the Hanke family and Kirsten’s partner, Morgan, deserve answers.”

“Today, I’m promising to fight for those answers.”

“It’s time for change.”
