BILL PUT FORWARD BY BECK’S TEAM REQUIRING REAL-TIME EMERGENCY ROOM CLOSURE REPORTING PASSES KEY HURDLE

Bill 606 Can Become Law As Early As Next Week
REGINA — Critical legislation put forward by Carla Beck’s team to require real-time reporting of emergency room closures has passed a key hurdle, receiving support from both sides of the aisle on Thursday.

“This legislation will force the SHA to share critical information with rural residents that will save lives,” said Jared Clarke, Shadow Minister for Rural & Remote Health. “We know the government has real-time emergency room closure information at its fingertips — I am glad we’re one step closer to that information being made available to everyday Saskatchewan people needing healthcare.

Clarke’s Bill 606, The Provincial Health Authority (ER Closure Right-to-Know) Amendment Act, would require an emergency room closure anywhere in Saskatchewan to be reported publicly through a website or other electronic means within one hour of a shutdown.

Currently, the Sask. Party-run provincial health authority claims to be posting closures once per day; however, ongoing analysis by Beck’s team has revealed that many emergency rooms open and close during the gap between reporting periods. Information obtained by Beck’s team previously indicates a secret real-time emergency room closure tracker exists but it is only accessible within the Saskatchewan Health Authority.

“We know information on whether an emergency room is open or not can be the difference between life and death,” Clarke said. “My message to the people of Saskatchewan is this — you have a choice.

“We will fight every day for better healthcare in rural Saskatchewan. We can elect a Carla Beck government and deliver big, bold change to ensure you get the care you need.”
