BIG ONTARIO CORPORATE LANDLORD SNATCHES UP UNITS, BRAGS ABOUT NO RENT CONTROL

One-Third of Renters Spending Over 50 Per Cent Of Their Income On Rent 
SASKATOON – Renters are paying more to keep a roof over their heads as another big corporate landlord — this time from Ontario — looks to get rich off Saskatchewan’s unregulated rental market.  
Corporate landlord Westplains Capital Inc. told AllSaskatchewan earlier this month that they have amassed 111 properties in the province and are looking to buy more on account of Saskatchewan’s lack of rent control. 
This comes as a new report from Rentals.ca indicates that one-third of renters are putting 50 per cent of their monthly income towards rent. The number is even more staggering for young people aged 18-24, with 50 per cent reporting putting half or more of their monthly income to cover rent.  
“Based on the feedback I’m getting, I suspect we’re worse than the national average here in Saskatchewan,” said April ChiefCalf, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Housing. 
“We know rent is rising faster here than anywhere else in Canada all the while Scott Moe and the Sask. Party are siding with big corporate landlord from other provinces over the hardworking people of Saskatchewan. 
“There should be protections in place to make sure these big companies don’t jack up the rent 20, even 30 per cent on our children and elderly parents. Saskatchewan should not be the Wild West for corporate landlords.” 
The Saskatchewan NDP is currently consulting the people of Saskatchewan on rent control legislation it intends to introduce in the fall sitting.
