BECK DEMANDS MOE JOIN GROWING CHORUS SUPPORTING END TO CHINESE EV TARIFFS TO SPARE SASKATCHEWAN CANOLA PRODUCERS OF FURTHER PAIN

Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities Says ‘Not A Single Shipment’ Of Canola Has Gone To China Since Tariffs Imposed

SASKATOON – Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck is demanding Premier Scott Moe immediately — and, for a change, clearly — call for an end to tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, a move that would put an immediate stop to devastating tariffs being imposed on canola seed, oil and meal.
“The Premier has dragged his heels and talked out of both sides of his mouth on this critical issue for more than a year while Saskatchewan farmers have suffered,” Beck said. “That’s not leadership. I am demanding a clear and unequivocal statement today from Scott Moe that the tariffs on Chinese EVs must end.

“Saskatchewan farmers feed the world. They need access to the Chinese trade market right now — this is about the future of our agriculture sector, our economy and the livelihoods of so, so many Saskatchewan families.”

Last week, the Chinese ambassador made it clear that ending the tariffs on Chinese EVs would also see a reactive removal of tariffs on canola products. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew immediately responded to this declaration by calling on the Federal Government to end the EV tariffs – Scott Moe has made no such comment and instead insisted ending the trade dispute is “not as simple as that.”

Also last week, the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities revealed that “Since the imposition of tariffs stemming from Ottawa’s dispute with China over electric vehicles, not a single shipment of Saskatchewan canola seed, oil, or meal has entered the Chinese market.”

“There is no room for nuance, no room for Scott Moe to keep sitting on the sidelines, not with so much at stake,” Beck said. “Frankly, people are tired of this. After 18 years of the Sask. Party, we see a stagnant economy and a cost-of-living crisis that is hammering household budgets. Since Moe became Premier, we’ve had the third-worst job creation in all of Canada.

“We don’t have to settle for this. The people of Saskatchewan are looking for hope and for a plan that’s focused on building a bright future for everyone that calls our incredible province home.”
