Beck noted that recalling the Legislature is not without precedent. She said everything possible must be done to ensure Saskatchewan industry and jobs are protected.
“We need to be proactive, not reactive,” Beck said. “If U.S. President Trump imposes 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods on Feb. 1, as he has threatened to do, people expect us to be in the Legislature ready to stand up for Saskatchewan.
“If these tariffs are imposed, we will need to quickly debate and settle on a comprehensive support package to protect jobs, as well as take strong legislative measures to fight back.”
Beck and Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Ministers have spent the last few weeks meeting with industry leaders in agriculture and mining, small business representatives, worker groups and more. In all of those discussions the Saskatchewan NDP has pledged to work together to fend off the tariffs threatened by the U.S. President and to make it clear it will harm business and drive up the cost of goods on both sides of the border.
Federal Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre also released a statement last week calling for the House of Commons to be recalled to address the threat of tariffs from the United States.
“Saskatchewan people expect their leaders to put partisan differences aside and work together for the sake of our whole province,” said Beck. “We’re prepared to stand up for our province and for our country and ensure that the livelihoods of Saskatchewan people are protected.”
