BECK CALLS FOR EMERGENCY LEGISLATURE SITTING IN RESPONSE TO STEEL TARIFFS, ADVOCATES FOR RETALIATORY MEASURES AND PIPELINE RUNNING TO CANADA’S EAST COAST

Beck says urgent action needed to protect Saskatchewan jobs and livelihoods

REGINA – Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck is calling for the provincial legislature to sit immediately in response to Donald Trump’s tariffs on Saskatchewan steel. Beck is also adding her voice to growing calls for retaliatory tariffs and a desperately needed pipeline running to Canada’s East Coast.

“It’s clearer than ever that Donald Trump only cares about Americans. He doesn’t care about what’s good for North America – he talked openly again yesterday about making Canada the 51st state,” Beck said.

“We’re not a state. We’re a nation. We’re Canada. And it’s clear that we cannot rollover to his every demand. Not when Canadian jobs and sovereignty are being threatened.

“Workers, producers and families gathered at the dinner table are going to feel the negative impact of these tariffs.

“We have to fight back.”

Beck added her voice to industry calls for retaliatory tariffs on U.S. steel and said the Saskatchewan Legislature needed to sit immediately to discuss and develop further response and support measures. She said all revenue generated from tariffs should be directly invested into affected industries.

Beck also said the need for a pipeline to Canada’s East Coast is more critical than ever.

“My message to every Premier and the Prime Minister is – get this done,” Beck said. “We need a pipeline running east. We have oil products coming in on our East Coast from Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, and the United States.  That’s a reality, while we have world-class and landlocked products right here on the prairies.”

Sally Housser, Saskatchewan NDP Energy & Resources Shadow Minister, said refineries in Moncton should be taking Canadian oil.

“We should be getting that oil to Moncton through a pipeline built using the best steel manufactured in the world – Saskatchewan steel,” she said.
