Head Of Far-Right Organization Pushing For Separation Calls Sask. Party Yorkton MLA ‘One Of Us’
REGINA – The Saskatchewan NDP is calling on Premier Scott Moe to come clean about the secret support within his own Caucus for a separatist group focused on tearing Canada apart.
The call comes as Alberta Premier Danielle Smith laid the groundwork in a formal address Monday for a referendum on that province leaving Canada. The vote will be held sometime in 2026 and has been longstanding push of Smith-backing group, the Alberta Prosperity Project. That group is closely aligned with Unified Grassroots, a Saskatchewan-based organization with close ties to Moe, who recently launched an online petition demanding a separatist referendum.
According to research released Tuesday by the Saskatchewan NDP Tuesday, Unified Grassroots used its resources to help nominate “several freedom loving candidates” who were later elected as Sask. Party MLAs in the October election, including Yorkton’s David Chan and Martensville-Blairmore's Jamie Martens.
“At a time when our province and nation are facing unprecedented outside threats to our economy and our sovereignty, you have Sask. Party MLAs secretly working to weaken our country and separate Saskatchewan from the rest of Canada,” said Aleana Young, Saskatchewan NDP Shadow Minister for Jobs and Economy.
“This is so damaging to our economy, especially at a time when we see broad consensus for nation-building projects from coast-to-coast — more rail lines, pipelines and powerlines.
“We should be building Saskatchewan and Canada up, not tearing everything down.”
Unified Grassroots is an organization led by Nadine Ness, a far-right conspiracy theorist who came to prominence following an hour-long one-on-one conversation with Premier Scott Moe. The organization has dedicated itself to infiltrating Sask. Party nomination races and party leadership races in order to influence the Sask. Party and drive its separatist agenda.
According to the organization’s private Facebook group, both Chan and Martens joined the group last year. Ness stated on a podcast just months ago that MLA David Chan was “one of us” and that she had encouraged him to run.
“No wonder Scott Moe can’t seem to find a backbone and denounce separatism, he’s got a bunch of separatists in his caucus,” Young said. “All this does is play directly into the hands of Donald Trump, who wants to tear us apart.
“Scott Moe needs to come clean to the people of Saskatchewan: how many secret separatists are in the Sask. Party Caucus? Will he publicly denounce their radical views and call on them to pledge full support for keeping Canada united?
